Builder lender or your own?
Many builders offer an incentive, such as closing cost help, when you use their lender. That can be a good deal, or the incentive can be made up in rate or fees. Get the builder's offer in writing, get a Loan Estimate from both lenders on the same day, and compare the totals.
Questions to ask about a new construction loan
- Can I lock my rate for the length of the build, and what does an extended lock cost?
- Building on your own lot? Ask about a construction-to-permanent loan, which covers the build and the mortgage in one closing.
- Do I qualify while still owning my current home? See selling your home first.
- What down payment help could I qualify for?
You are never required to use any lender we suggest. Loan programs, rates and approval are set by the lender and change often.
